A garage door that squeaks, sticks, or judders as it opens is usually telling you something specific is wrong, rather than that the whole door is failing. Here is what is normally behind each symptom, and when it is worth calling someone in.

Squeaking or grinding noises

This is very often just dry rollers, hinges or a dry track. Rollers and hinges on a sectional or up & over door need periodic lubrication with a silicone-based spray (avoid WD-40 on the rollers themselves, as it can attract dust). If the noise continues after lubrication, worn rollers or a bent track are the next likely cause.

Sticking or catching partway through opening

This is commonly a track alignment issue, or debris and grit built up in the track. It can also point to a spring that has started to lose tension unevenly, which puts extra strain on the mechanism. Do not force a sticking door open or closed with the opener — that is how motors burn out and cables snap.

Running off its track

This is one to stop using the door for. A door that has come off its track even slightly is under uneven tension and can come away further, which is a genuine safety risk, especially with the springs still under load. Switch to manual and avoid using the door until it has been looked at.

Noisy or slow motor

If the door itself moves freely by hand but the motor is noisy or slow, that usually points to the opener motor or gearing rather than the door mechanism, which is often a more straightforward and cheaper fix than door-side problems.

What you can safely check yourself

Visually check the rollers and track for obvious damage, make sure the track is clear of debris, and try lubricating moving parts. What you should not do is attempt to adjust or replace springs and cables yourself — they are under high tension and can cause serious injury.
