There is no single answer that applies to every door, but most well-maintained garage doors in the UK last somewhere between 15 and 30 years, depending on the material, how it is used, and how exposed it is to weather. Here is what actually drives that range.
Material makes a big difference
- Steel sectional and roller doors with a good powder-coated or galvanised finish typically last 20–30 years with reasonable care.
- Timber doors can look fantastic but need more regular maintenance (repainting or resealing) and generally have a shorter lifespan, often 15–20 years, unless kept up carefully.
- GRP (fibreglass) doors resist rot and corrosion well and tend to sit toward the longer end of the range.
- Older single-skin up & over doors, especially pre-insulated designs, often show their age sooner — around 15–20 years is common before they start to warp or the mechanism wears out.
What shortens a door’s life
Coastal exposure to salt air, doors that face prevailing wind and rain, minimal or no maintenance, and heavy daily use (a busy household opening the door multiple times a day) all take a toll faster than average. Mechanical parts — springs, cables, rollers — tend to wear out well before the door panels themselves, which is why regular repairs can often extend a door’s usable life significantly beyond its mechanism’s original lifespan.
Simple things that extend a door’s life
- Lubricating moving parts every few months.
- Checking and tightening loose hardware.
- Repainting or resealing timber doors as needed rather than waiting until it looks obviously worn.
- Getting odd noises or sticking looked at early, rather than letting a small issue turn into a bigger one.
Signs your door is nearing the end
Repeated faults, visible corrosion or rot, a door that no longer sits square, or parts becoming hard to source are all signs it may be more cost-effective to replace than keep repairing — see our guide on repair versus replacement for more on that.
