Most garage door calls we take in Christchurch and Highcliffe are repairs, not new doors. The door is stuck open on a school-run morning, the remote has died, or a cable has jumped and the leaf is hanging. This is what we actually fix in the 25-mile catchment, and when we will tell you to replace instead of patch.

Cables, springs and doors that will not close

Broken cables and tired springs are the classic “it was fine yesterday” failure. On an up-and-over, a snapped cable can leave the door crooked in the opening. On a sectional, a spring failure can make the door too heavy to lift by hand. Do not try to wind springs yourself. They are under load, and a slipped winding bar is how people get hurt.

We replace cables, springs and the associated drums and brackets on doors we fitted and on doors fitted by someone else. If the curtain or panels are still sound, a mechanical repair is usually the right call.

Motors, remotes and doors that open themselves

A motor that hums but does not move is often the gearbox or a failed limit switch, not “the whole door”. Remotes that need you to stand in the driveway are usually batteries, aerial position, or a handset that has lost its code. We carry common operators and we can often get a household moving again the same visit.

If you are adding automation to a working manual door, that is a different job. See garage door automation rather than treating it as an emergency repair.

Locks, damaged slats and “it came from another company”

We lock-change and realign doors that were supplied years ago by other firms. A roller with a chewed bottom slat, a sectional with a cracked panel, or an up-and-over that has dropped on one side are all repairable if the main structure is honest. If the door is rotten, twisted, or the tracks are pulling out of crumbling brickwork, we will say so instead of quoting a repair that lasts a month.

When repair is a waste of money

Replace rather than repair when:

• the panels or slats are corroded through, not just scratched
• the opening has been altered and the door no longer fits square
• you are on the second or third motor in a few years on a tired curtain
• you actually want more insulation, quiet, or a colour change anyway

At that point the labour to keep patching is better spent on a new roller or sectional that fits the opening properly. We will not upsell a new door to avoid a cable job.

Servicing so the emergency is less likely

A yearly service catches stretched cables, dry rollers and motors that are working too hard. If you are in Highcliffe, Christchurch, Bournemouth or the near Hampshire side of the catchment, it is cheaper than a Sunday call-out. Ask when you book and we will tell you honestly whether the door in front of us is a service, a repair, or a replacement.
